Free Online Class - Advanced Reading - Grades 3-8

This free one-hour, online class is a sample of the 8-week Advanced Reading Course (ARC) for grades 3-8. In this class, students will learn how to track the plot of a story and support their answers with the best evidence. The free class is offered at no obligation so parents can determine if ARC is right for their child.

The Advanced Reading Course Free Class is a live, one-hour online lesson for students in grades 3-8. Students will practice following the plot of a story and supporting their answers with the best evidence from the text. This interactive class gives families a firsthand look at the instruction offered in the eight-week Advanced Reading Course.

During the lesson, students will read and discuss a passage, examine how its events connect, and work through reading comprehension questions with instructor guidance. They will practice looking closely at what the passage says, explaining their reasoning, and recognizing why one answer is better supported than another. Classes are offered in separate grade bands: grades 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8.

ARC is designed for students who can read independently and are ready to develop stronger comprehension and analytical skills. The full course builds on these foundations with lessons on facts and inferences, characterization, perspective, and comparing and contrasting characters.

The class is taught by David Marrufo, who earned a B.A. in English from UC Berkeley with Highest Honors in English and High Distinction in General Scholarship, and an M.A. in Philosophy from San Francisco State University. His teaching experience includes private and charter schools, independent tutoring, and SAT Reading Boot Camps.

The Free Class takes place online through Zoom, so students can participate from home. There is no cost or obligation to enroll in a paid course. Reserve a Free Class to see how ARC teaches students to read carefully, think through challenging questions, and explain their answers using evidence.
