Battle of the Bots VEX Robotics (In-Person 5-Day Camp) - 4 locations - $579 (special ends 4/21)

Available at Palo Alto, Cupertino, San Jose, and Millbrae. Battle of the Bots is a great way to learn how technologies like programming, sensors, gears, and mechanics work, all while having fun! Campers will learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineering as they team up to build robotic systems and compete against one another in tasks such as sumo wrestling, tug-of-war, head-to-head combat, and much more!

Monday:

  • Icebreakers
  • ​Introduction to Robots, definitions, examples, history, science, and components
  • Introduction to the VEX robot system
  • Introduction to programming fundamentals
  • Introduction to programming the VEX robot system
  • Introduction to VEX sensors
  • Group hands-on project: creating your first VEX robot from scratch
  • VEX robot activity, where the VEX robots will interact with each other in a team activity

Tuesday:

  • ​Introductions to machines
  • Introduction to more complex machines and their applications
  • Applying the principles of machines to robotics
  • Introduction to gathering of sensor data and usage of the sensor data in VEX software algorithms
  • Group hands-on project where we apply our fundamental understanding of software programming to build an autonomous VEX robot that can make decisions based on sensor data autonomously without remote control input

Wednesday:

  • Revisit the learnings from yesterday, looking at more real-world examples of the two key types of robots
  • Creation of our second autonomous robot, which can utilize a different kind of sensor to perform a different quest autonomously 
  • Our autonomous robot challenge, where the various teams showcase their programming prowess and robot build skills and share their ideas and learnings

Thursday:

  • ​Introduction to VEX competitions
  • Introduction to the seven stages in the Engineering Design Process
  • Go through each of the seven Engineering Design Process stages in detail
  • Apply the Engineering Design Process in the creation of the robot that will participate in the end-of-day group challenge; today's challenge will be remote-controlled
  • The winning team will share their ideas and tips

Friday (Final competition and presentation day)

  • ​Creation of the final tournament field
  • Application of the Engineering Design Process steps to modifications of the robot design to satisfy the new requirements of the final day team competition
  • Applying the programming principles to create software that will allow the robot to perform autonomously
  • Applying the Engineering Design Process to adjust the integration of the robot design and software programming
  • The final tournament
  • Winners explain tips and tricks that allowed their robot to emerge victorious
  • End-of-camp presentations in front of parents: parents are invited to arrive at 3.30 pm for end-of-camp presentations, 30 minutes before the regular end-of-camp time
